Today I Learned… WETA pays attention to detail!

In the movie version of “LORD OF THE RINGS”, Bilbo’s sword, Sting, has elvish writing inscribed on it. However, in “THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY” (as seen the the trailers and other previews), it doesn’t.

That’s because, in the books, the writing (which translates into “Maegnas (Sting in Sindarin) is my name, I am the spider’s bane”) wasn’t inscribed into the blade until AFTER the end of “The Hobbit”, when Bilbo asks the elves of Rivendell to do it (on the way home after the Battle of the Five Armies). Sting doesn’t even get it’s name until AFTER Bilbo fights off the spiders of Mirkwood (which will probably take place in the first HOBBIT movie).

The more you know…
