A Note Back From God

My friend Jay Smith posted this on Facebook earlier this evening.  I think it’s beautiful, so I’m sharing it, with his blessing.

It starts with:

I got a note back from God today. At least I think it was God. Who the hell knows?

FIRST NINE (crappy quality) MINUTES OF “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” ONLINE!

A Russian website has posted the first nine minutes of STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS online.

I will not be embedding the video here, as everyone who’s done so (up to and including GIZMODO) has gotten a C&D from Paramount Pictures.  But you’re welcome to follow the link above to watch the video, which looks like it was shot by someone who snuck a camera into a theater (so, yeah… not great quality).  It doesn’t spoil much… we don’t even learn the villain’s name (although Benedict Cumberbatch DOES make a momentary appearance), but it does have a LOT of action… and it ends at a nice cliffhanger, then shows about a minute of footage we’ve seen in the trailers already.

So, if you want, check it out before it vanishes.  🙂

“Cloudy with a chance of Brimstone…”

And now, your 5-day weather forecast…

Graphic by me.

Now, for the record… no, I don’t actually think that the world will end on Friday. Now, I don’t KNOW that, but I see no reason why the universe, the world, man’s existence upon it, or even just our civilization should come to an end on that particular date.  Of course, that doesn’t meant that it WON’T… I mean, there are any number of things that can destroy us all in a short amount of time with little or no warning whatsoever, up to and including:

  • Asteroid Strike (most Near-Earth objects aren’t detected until AFTER they’ve passed us by, so we may well not even know about an incoming object until it hits the atmosphere).
  • Gamma-Ray Burst from another star (which we won’t see coming until the rays actually hit us).
  • Accidental ICBM launch, starting a nuclear war (“Bob, did you just push the red button?”  “I dunno… I’m color blind!”).
  • A virulent, fatal epidemic of a heretofore unknown disease races through the human race within days, killing us all.

And those are just a few of the more “scientific” possibilities. That doesn’t even take into account whether the angel Israfil blows The Final Trumpet, or The Four Horsemen ride, or the Bifrost cracks as Thor battles The Midgard Serpent, or Brahma awakens from his dream.  Because, hey, just because you don’t believe in something doesn’t mean it isn’t true.  Or, for that matter, that it is.  Either way, the universe really doesn’t care what you believe.

However, there’s no reason why any of those things (as well as many others) should particularly happen on Friday.  After all, they could happen NEXT week.  Or next month.  Or next year.  Or… eventually.

Or they could happen tonight.  Or tomorrow.  Or never.

Maybe, rather than worrying about the possible end-of-all that may or may not happen, we should think more about the fact that everything that has ever been has, or will, end.  And that includes me.  And that includes you.  And it includes everyone and everything that you and I know and love.

Depressing, ain’t it?  Well, yeah, it can be.  Or it can be what motivates you to create great things, and do good works, and be kind, and to love the people in your life and let them know that they are important, and beautiful, and all of the other things that people are but still need to constantly be reminded of.  Since our time is so very short, maybe we should be spending it making the world a better and happier place, rather than wasting that valuable time pondering it’s end.  That end will come soon enough in it’s own time, and I’d prefer that my last thoughts were not “Oh, I’ve wasted my life…”

Just a thought, is all…

TRAILER PARK: Star Trek Into Darkness (2 minute trailer)

Paramount has released a longer trailer for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS (the next TREK movie) online.  Check it out (and if you can, watch it full-screen, in HD!)…

And, hey, check out this image at about :55 seconds into the trailer…

Gee, I wonder what… or who… could be inside of those tubes? I mean, I have a thought, but it would be very… in-KAHN-sistant… with some of the other info released about the movie. Plus, we still have yet to see Peter Weller in any of the trailers (or, from what I’ve heard, the nine-minute preview released over the weekend, which I did not get to see yet). Why haven’t we seen HIM yet? Is it because, if they showed him, that would spoil a big surprise? Like who, or what, the “villain” is? Hmmmm…

LET THE POINTLESS SPECULATION BEGIN!  😉

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS will be released May 17th, 2013.
