According to a new paper in the science journal NATURE, man has been making cheese for at least 7,000 years. The only known older “processed” foods (as in foods not found normally in nature, but that require some sort of preparation to turn it into food) are bread and alcohol, which have each been around for about 10,000 years.
There’s also evidence that man was making yogurt during the same period as cheese.
There is a theory that civilization developed because man discovered how to make these things… bread, cheese, beer… and our ancestors needed to settle down, grow crops, domesticate animals, and develop communities in order to make these things on a regular basis.
As someone who often enjoys a yummy cheese sandwich with a hard cider, I kinda like that theory. 🙂
