New “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” Photo… any maybe some news?

Paramount Pictures has released a new photo from STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, with Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, and Benedict Cumberbatch as…

No, I won’t tell you the name he was given here, but if you check out the link above, you’ll find it out. There’s no spoiler… the name isn’t one belonging to a recognizable character from TREK.  Which is interesting, in that previously the writing team said that the villain was one from TREK canon.  Meaning that they were lying, and the name is just a red herring?  Or… Cumberbatch isn’t actually playing the villain?  After all, they still haven’t shown Peter Weller in any promotional material, so maybe HE’S actually playing the (recognizable) villain, and BC is just a red herring?  (Gee, there are a lot of scarlet fish involved with this movie!)  Or… is there maybe another possibility?

My lady-friend Steph had a theory that I thought might have some meat to it… what if the villain is actually not BC’s character, but some sort of mind-controlling entity?  Lord knows that TREK has plenty of those running around!  So the “villain” may be more than one character!  Possibilities there include (just off the top of my head) Gary Mitchell, Redjac, Trelane, or any of the other god-like aliens that have populated TREK over the years.  So there’s that, too.

So, what do YOU think?  Any ideas?

EDIT: I’ve added more news in the comments.  Warning… SPOILERS!

  1. SPOLERS: So, according to this article (http://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/scifi/alice-eves-star-trek-darkness-character-identified-klingons-confirmed.html), actress Alice Eve (the blonde-haired actress featured in the teaser trailer) is playing Carol Marcus (the woman from Kirk’s past who is the mother of Kirk’s son, David, in “STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN”. Also, the movie will not only have Klingons (as seen in the trailer), but we see them without their helmets, and YES, they have the head ridges… but also the facial hair styles from the original series, and ornamental piercings. And part of the movie takes place on Quo’nos, the Klingon homeworld. So there you go.
